About Momi Shells

Momi (Mitrella margarita - members of the mulluscan family Columbellidae) means "pearl" in Hawaiian and is now known as momi 'o ke kai, or pearl of the sea. Momi vary in color from pure white to a dark brown/black. Darker shells are more rare and are known as ikaika, (strong, powerful) or 'ele 'ele (black). Lighter colored shells are 'ahiehie (faded) and midtones are known as maika'i. (excellent). Momi kua'ula are ribbed or grooved shells of ivory color with brown streaks or blotches. These are the most abundant variety and commonly used in leis.
